Caring for Kids with Pets

Pediatric nurses Deborah Rabuck, R.N. (left), and Maryann Godshall, R.N., (shown with pooch Charlotte), remember the day a therapy dog helped brighten a young boy recovering from burn wounds. The boy was withdrawn after coming out of a coma. But when he met one of Rabuck’s four therapy dogs, he laughed and began talking again. “It’s just one of our remarkable stories,” says Godshall, who presented their poster on “The Implementation of Pet Visitation/Therapy Program in a Pediatric Unit” at the Pediatric Nursing 20^th Annual Conference in Orlando, Fla. LVHHN’s pet therapy program is helping children forget about their illnesses and be kids again.

When we discover better ways to care for patients, we feel it’s important to share it with our colleagues at LVHHN, as well as our colleagues across the country and the globe. During the past year, our clinicians presented 67 poster presentations and 53 oral presentations at numerous conferences, including the American Association of Critical Care Nurses National Teaching Institute and the Sigma Theta Tau International Convention.

We also published 29 articles in professional journals, including 12 published in peer reviewed nursing journals. You, too, could see your byline in publications such as Health Care Management Review, Journal of Emergency Nursing and Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety.
